Our Service
Backwater Sanitary valves (also known as “Check Valves” or “Backwater Valves”) are mechanical devices that are designed to allow the flow of water in one direction away from your home. Used on a sanitary lateral, they can reduce the risk of sewage backup if installed properly and maintained adequately.
How Does it Work?
- The valve is usually open, allowing water to flow out of the house
- When there’s a backup in the sewer line, water pressure causes the valve to close
- The valve prevents sewage from flowing back up into the home through toilets, showers, and other plumbing fixtures
- Once the pressure subsides, the valve automatically opens again
When It’s Needed
- Backwater valves are required by some municipalities and recommended by others
- They can be installed during new construction or retrofitted into existing homes
- Retrofitting a backwater valve can be more expensive than installing it during construction
Benefits
- Backwater valves protect homes from sewage backups, which can cause water damage, contamination, and health hazards
